Fernando Rovzar, founder and creative director of Lemon Studios and producer of Sr. Ávila, the HBO Latin America series that received the International Emmy for best non-English U.S. prime time production in 2017, spoke about current projects and the importance of bringing unique stories to life during the TV Latina Festival.

During the conversation, which you can view here, and speaking with Elizabeth Bowen-Tombari, editor of TV Latina, about what productions the company is interested in, Rovzar said: “We are looking for genres that have not yet been addressed in Mexican television. We are looking for science fiction, adventure, horror or musicals. We want to avoid any kind of stagnation within the television industry. If we are not careful, it is very easy to repeat [the genres and stories that are already being made]. This can happen on an individual level but also in the industry. We believe that we have to go against the grain of what’s currently being done in Mexico to move away from the predictable genres and start venturing into unknown territory. There is more risk, but there is also more reward.”

Currently, Lemon Studios, founded in 2003 by Rovzar and his brother Billy, as well as Alejandro Lozano and Erica Sánchez, is working with TelevisaUnivision for its ViX+ platform, as well as Apple TV+ for Las Azules. Rovzar highlighted these and other topics in this in-depth conversation.
