SÃO PAULO: Brazil’s Globo has licensed its International Emmy-winning novela Side by Side into Mozambique, where it was picked up by free-to-air channel STV.

The telenovela tells the story of Isabel (Camila Pitanga), the daughter of an ex-slave who falls in love with a capoeira player (Lázaro Ramos). She shares a friendship with Laura (Marjorie Estiano), an heiress arranged to marry Edgar (Thiago Fragoso). The program follows their quest to achieve freedom in the conservative society of Rio de Janeiro at the start of the 20th century. Side by Side won the 2013 International Emmy Award in the telenovela category.

STV has been airing Brazilian telenovelas for a decade. Most recently, it was the home to Globo’s Caribbean Flower, which Side by Side is replacing.
