Football Revenues for Key European Broadcasters to Top $10 Billion

In the 2021-22 season, broadcasters in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy and Spain will make almost $11 billion from their live coverage of domestic leagues and the UEFA Champions League, according to Digital TV Research.

Revenues for those broadcasters will reach $10.5 billion in the upcoming season as fans return to stadiums. These broadcasters will pay $8.3 billion for the football rights.

According to Digital TV Research, the U.K. will generate the most revenues out of the five markets covered in the study, generating $3.6 billion from broadcasts of the English Premier League ($2.9 billion) and Champions League ($673 million).

Spanish broadcasters are expected to bring in $1.7 billion from their domestic league and $567 million from the Champions League for a total of $2.3 billion. Germany is at a similar level.

In Italy, domestic league coverage ($1.3 billion) is far more lucrative than Champions League ($253 million). While in France, Champions League will bring in revenues of $488 million, ahead of the $414 million from domestic league coverage.

Broadcasters’ football revenues fell by $6.1 billion during the 2019-20 season amid the pandemic.
