MIPTV Spotlight: GMA Worldwide

CANNES: This year marks the 20th anniversary of GMA Worldwide, which is heading to MIPTV with the highlights Because of You, Wish I May and My Superstar.

Roxanne J. Barcelona, the company’s VP, believes that these titles will be appealing to potential buyers because their stories focus on romance, love for family, the courage to strive for the best in the pursuit of happiness, and justice. “These are universal themes that bring out the best in the human spirit,” she says.

GMA Worldwide is working to strengthen its partnerships with broadcasters in the Asia-Pacific region, in North and South America, and in Africa. “We are focused on entering into more deals in South America,” Barcelona says. “We continue to look for new markets for our dramas and drama formats, and we are optimistic that this year more deals will be forged with new clients.”

MIPTV Spotlight: GMA Worldwide

CANNES: Filipino telenovelas contain a number of elements that make them stand out in the international market, says Roxanne Barcelona, the VP of GMA Worldwide.

These include the presentation of the country’s unique cityscapes and countryside that serve as the backdrop for the stories, as well as the integration of Philippine history into story lines and the representation of local cultures. These values are present in the titles Forever, about a young plantation heiress who falls in love with an ordinary farm boy, and Mother’s Love, which tells the story of three women and how each struggles to piece together her own family. GMA Worldwide is also presenting Unforgettable, about two childhood sweethearts who grew up poor and strove to better their lives.
