Netflix Reports on Binge Pairing Patterns

BEVERLY HILLS: Netflix has unveiled new research regarding the binge routines of its members around the world, finding that viewers most often watch movies as a break between finishing series.

According to Netflix, a majority of members (59 percent) take a pause after finishing a series, usually lasting three days, before committing to a new show. During that break, more than half (61 percent) watch a movie to keep the binge feeling going.

“It’s interesting that in this golden age of television, movies are consistently in demand on Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, the chief content officer at Netflix. “What we’ve come to figure out is that movies are really an important part of people’s viewing routines and complementary to the way they watch and enjoy TV.”

Netflix also looked into what movies most often followed some of today’s top series. After watching House of Cards, some members move to Beasts of No Nation—swapping politics for war, but keeping a narrative deft with uncompromising and ruthless leaders. Bloodline and The Big Short are also a popular combo. Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad is tied to Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Gilmore Girls fans, meanwhile, look to Clueless and Mean Girls.

Documentary films also satisfy the post-binge craving. After watching Narcos, viewers may stream Cartel Land and Narco Cultura. Marvel’s Luke Cage continued the pursuit for justice with 13TH, while fans of Black Mirror saw the real consequences of technology in Hot Girls Wanted. While most viewers of BoJack Horseman later engage with stand-up specials, some delve into the area of self-help with Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru.

Viewers of horror series most often turn to comedy before moving to the next thriller. For example, fans of Stranger Things turn to Ghostbusters, while watchers of Scream look for laughs with Ride Along.
