Germany, U.K. Lead International Emmy Wins

NEW YORK: Deutschland 83, Capital and Dustin Hoffman were among the winners at the International Emmy Awards in New York last night, with Germany and the U.K. leading the pack with three wins each.

The 44th International Emmy Awards took place at the New York Hilton, hosted by Alan Cumming. The event saw awards presented in ten categories. There were also two special awards. Danish actress Birgitte Hjort Sorenson, the star of Borgen, presented the International Emmy Directorate Award to Maria Rørbye Rønn, CEO and director general of Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR). Scandal star Tony Goldwyn presented the International Emmy Founders Award to Shonda Rhimes.

Dustin Hoffman won for best performance by an actor for the U.K.’s Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot from Endor Productions, Red Arrow International and The Weinstein Company. The actress category went to Christiane Paul in Under the Radar from Germany’s Enigma WDR and ARD Degeto.

The British series Hoff The Record from the U.K.’s Me & You Productions took the comedy category. Best drama went to UFA Fiction and RTL Television’s Deutschland 83. The winner for non-English-language U.S. primetime program was Francisco, El Jesuita (Francis, the Jesuit) from Anima Films, The History Channel Latin America, Telemundo, Claro Video and DIRECTV. Globo TV’s Hidden Truths picked up the win in the telenovela category. The TV movie/mini-series International Emmy was awarded to Kudos and BBC One’s Capital.

The winner in the arts programming category was The Man Who Shot Hiroshima from Japan’s WOWOW. Best documentary went to War of Lies from Germany’s Zischlermann Filmproduktion. The non-scripted entertainment winner was The Great Swedish Adventure from Meter Television and SVT.

“’Great television from around the world integrates the best in crafts, acting and creative arts,” said International Academy President and CEO Bruce L. Paisner. “The Academy is proud so much of that was on display on our stage.”
