U.S. SVOD Subs to Hit 270 Million in 2024

A new study from Digital TV Research projects that the number of SVOD subscribers for services delivering movies, linear channels and episodic television in the U.S. will rise from 160 million in 2018 to 270 million in 2024.

The North America OTT TV & Video Forecasts report forecasts that almost 78 percent of U.S. TV homes (94 million) will have at least one SVOD subscription by 2024, up from 84 million last year. The average SVOD home will pay for 2.89 SVOD subscriptions, up from 1.91 in 2018.

Netflix will maintain the lead with 68.3 million subs in 2024, just ahead of Amazon’s 61.2 million. Hulu is projected to reach 41.6 million for its SVOD service.

“We expect that Disney+ will have 25 million U.S. subscribers by 2024,” said Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research. “Apple TV+’s growth will be more modest at 8 million by 2024. This means that Netflix’s share of the total will fall from 37 percent in 2018 to 25 percent in 2024—despite the company adding 10 million subscribers.”
