Ratings Roundup: Argentina

PREMIUM: Sports dominated prime-time ratings in Argentina over the last week, with Canal 7 faring well with boxing and Telefe delivering big numbers for the World Cup qualifier against Peru.

Public broadcaster Canal 7, which usually lags in the ratings, had the number one program on Saturday night with the WBC middleweight title fight between Argentina’s Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. of Mexico. It earned a 25.5 household rating, according to IBOPE data. Canal 7 also won the day on Sunday with domestic football league matches taking two of the top three spots in the ratings.

Market leader Telefe dominated the top of the charts as usual last week. The number one program of the week was the 2014 World Cup soccer qualifier between Peru and Argentina on Telefe on Tuesday night with a household rating of 32.6.

On weekdays, the top of the ratings usually belonged to Graduados (Graduates), Telefe’s daily comedy series about young students, which was number one on Monday, Wednesday (top rating of the week at 25.8), Thursday and Friday and second to the soccer on Tuesday in Argentina’s approximately 14 million television homes.

Telefe’s telenovela Dulce amor (Sweet Love) finished in second place on Wednesday and in third place on three other nights (top rating of 20.9). La Trece, which is number two in the market, had the light-entertainment series ShowMatch and the novela Sos mi hombre in the week’s top shows.

Among the shows airing weekly, the Peruvian telenovela Mi problema con las mujeres (My Problem with Women) on Telefe was number two on Monday (21.1 rating) and Telefe’s drama series La dueña, produced with Endemol, was third on Wednesday (18.2 rating). The Simpsons finished fourth for Telefe on Friday (15.8 rating).

On Sunday, Canal 7 came first, with the game between Velez Sarsfield and River Plate as the day’s number one program with a 22.6 rating, while Boca Juniors versus Independiente on the same channel was number three with a 15.4 rating. Number two of the day was the local version of singing contest format The Voice on Telefe with a 19.3 rating.

So far in September, Telefe leads broadcast channels with a 12 average rating, followed by La Trece at 9, Canal 9 at 5, América 2 at 4.3 and Canal 7 with a 3.5 household rating.
