Social Wit List: February 2016

NEW YORK: In February, ABS-CBN’s Dolce Amore was the most-buzzed-about new show in social media, with some 281,000 tweets, according to The WIT.

The Filipino telenovela charts the story of two young wandering souls, brought together by destiny, who feel an infallible connection with each other. Across Facebook and Twitter, many comments gave the show a #ThumbsUp and thought it was #HeartWarming and had #CuteKids.

Number two on the list of the top ten new shows stirring up buzz in social media globally was Netflix’s Fuller House. The follow-up to the sitcom Full House that ran on ABC from 1987 to 1995, with most of the original cast on board, generated about 235,000 tweets. Social media was buzzing about the #NostalgiaShot in the #FaithfulReboot, saying that #NothingHasChanged. The show also had many #BingeWatching the episodes via the streaming platform.

Objetivo Eurovisión, which aired on La 1 in Spain, saw the artist who will represent Spain at the 2016 edition of the Eurovision song contest selected among six aspiring singers. Around 232,000 social media comments were made about the broadcast from an #EngagedAudience talking about the #CheeringContestants or #TooManyTechnicalFails.

GMA Network’s Lip Sync Battle Philippines, a local adaptation of the entertainment format in which celebrities lip-synch songs, saw about 159,000 tweets. Many #LOLTweets in social media were talking about the #Entertaining performances and the #GreatSiaRoutine.

Coming in at number five with around 80,000 social media comments was M6’s Garde à vous, retour au service militaire. The French show is a local adaptation of the format Lads’ Army in which 20 18- to 24-year-olds are taken back in time to see whether they can cope with the military service of 1960s France. While many in social media thought the program was #Entertaining and had #PositiveValues, others thought there was #ShockingBehavior or were sending #MockingTweets.

The FX anthology thriller American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, focusing on some of the biggest true-crime stories, begins with the O.J. Simpson murder trial (based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book). It had around 78,000 comments about its debut. Much of the social media chatter was about the #GreatCast for the #Riveting and #ShockingStory.

ABC in the U.S. broadcast The Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60, a special celebrating the 60th anniversary of the iconic theme park, with performances from Elton John, Tori Kelly, Jessie J and Kelsea Ballerini. The one-off garnered around 74,000 tweets, with #DisneyFans expressing #WarmMemories. Others were commenting about the #StarWarsMoment or the fact that there was an #UnavailableApp.

BBC Three’s The Supergamers had around 66,000 tweets sent out about it. Presented by YouTube star Dan Howell, the documentary profiles three young British gamers at different stages of their careers who all have dreams of reaching the top. The #EngagedAudience on social media featured a lot of #HardcoreGamers talking about the #StarHost.

Another series from ABS-CBN in the Philippines, The Story of Us, stirred up a lot of buzz, with 64,000 tweets. The telenovela revolves around two childhood best friends turned lovers who are driven apart when one of them goes to the United States to meet her estranged mother. There was a lot of #Excitement from fans commenting in social media about the #StarCouple and the #MovingLoveStory.

Number ten on the list for February was Got Talent España, which debuted on Telecinco in Spain. It marked the talent format’s return to the Spanish market after previously airing on Cuatro in 2008. There were #MixedFeelings among the 60,000 tweets sent about the show, with much talk about the #GoodChemistry of the #StarJudges but also comments that there was #NotEnoughTalent.
