Sintonia Leads August’s Social Wit List

Netflix’s Sintonia generated more Instagram buzz than any new show in August, according to The WIT.

The Brazilian drama series—which racked up 795,000 followers—tells the story of three childhood companions who all come from the same favela of São Paulo before they grow up and part ways—one explores the drug trade, another religion, and the third, funk music. The series was created by KondZilla, a Brazilian screenwriter, label owner and director who has over 1.7 million Instagram followers.

FOX’s BH90210, the revival of the 1990s teen soap Beverly Hills, 90210, came in second on the list, garnering 328,000 followers. The show is inspired by the lives of the six original stars, all of whom have sizable followings: Tori Spelling has 1.4 million followers, Jennie Garth has 778,000, Jason Priestley has 537,000, Ian Ziering has 494,000, Brian Austin Green has 315,000 and Gabrielle Carteris rounds out the list with 198,000.

Third on the list is A Black Lady Sketch Show, which bowed on HBO in the U.S. and features narrative sketches performed by a core cast of black women as well as celebrity guests. Created, written by and starring Robin Thede (87,300 followers), the show features Issa Rae (2.3 million), Quinta Brunson (909,000) and Ashley Nicole Black (15,400).

E!’s Flip It Like Disick, a renovation reality series following Kourtney Kardashian’s ex Scott Disick—who has 22.6 million followers—and his high-end house-flipping and home-design business, came in fourth on the list with 112,000 followers.

Mexico’s ¿Quién es la máscara?, a local adaptation of the Korean singing competition format King of Mask Singer, scored 62,000 followers. Hosts Omar Chaparro and Natalia Tellez have 3.5 and 2.3 million followers, respectively, and Carlos Rivera (3.9 million followers), Consuelo Duval (2.7 million), Adrian Uribe (1.9 million) and Yuri (1.2 million) all appear as featured “Investigators Panel” members.

Netflix’s Hyperdrive nabbed the sixth spot on the list with 57,000 followers. The competition series, which is produced by Charlize Theron (4.4 million followers), sees elite street racers from across the globe compete for glory in supercharged custom cars on one of the largest automotive obstacle courses ever constructed. Contestants such as Karolina Pilar and Axel François have 134,000 and 25,200 followers, respectively.

Next up is The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which launched globally on Netflix on August 30 to some 53,000 followers. The puppetry and animation company (The Jim Henson Company) behind The Dark Crystal—the 1982 movie for which the series serves as a prequel—has 33,600 followers.

Carnival Row from Amazon Prime Video collected 52,000 followers, as stars Cara Delevingne and Orlando Bloom—with 43.1 and 2.8 million followers respectively—already enjoy huge social media fan bases. The drama is set in a Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures.

The weekday entertainment talk and comedy series Jerry O, hosted by actor Jerry O’Connell (303,000 followers), features a mix of celebrity interviews and specially produced comedy segments from the Funny or Die team. It scored 42,000 followers.

Rounding out the list at 32,000 followers is El Juego de las Llaves (The Game of Keys), a Mexican comedy that follows sexual intimacy among four couples, all of whom are friends. Starring Maite Perroni (5.9 million followers), Sebastian Zurita (601,000) and Humberto Busto (53,000), the series debuted globally on August 16 on Amazon Prime Video.
