Global SVOD Subs to Hit 1.7 Billion in 2027

The number of SVOD subscriptions globally is expected to hit 1.69 billion in 2027, per new Digital TV Research data.

The global SVOD landscape will add 485 million subs between 2021 and 2027. By 2027, the six major U.S.-based giants will have 988 million subs, up from 612 million in 2021.

Netflix will add 31 million subscribers between 2021 and 2027, despite losing 4 million subscribers in North America. Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, noted, “Our Netflix forecasts for 2027 are 29 million lower than our February update—at 253 million. Netflix needs to boost its content to counter its fresher and cheaper rivals.”

Disney+ is expected to overtake Netflix in 2025, adding 144 million subs from 2021 to 2027 to reach 274 million. Disney+ Hotstar will expand to 13 Asian countries by 2027, supplying 42 percent (114 million) of the company’s total subs base but just 11 percent ($1.58 billion) of its revenues in 2027. Netflix will retain its revenue lead.

Amazon is projected to have 252 million subs in 2027. Paramount+ will have 91 million and HBO 89 million.
