Janet Jackson New York Times Presents Doc

The New York Times Presents series’ next film, Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson, is slated to bow on FX and Hulu later this month.

Directed by Jodi Gomes, Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson examines the racial and cultural elements that collided on the Super Bowl stage in 2004 and explores how the incident impacted Janet Jackson and her career. It will premiere simultaneously on FX and Hulu on November 19.

The documentary features footage and interviews with several people who were at the controls that night in Houston, including NFL and MTV executives, to reconstruct the incident and explain how it shaped culture in the decades to follow. It also includes new reporting from The New York Times, as well as insights from music industry insiders, cultural critics and members of the Jackson family.

Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson follows on the success of The New York Times Presents’ Controlling Britney Spears, Framing Britney Spears and The Killing of Breonna Taylor.

The New York Times Presents is a series of standalone documentary films powered by the journalism at The New York Times and produced by The New York Times and Left/Right, a Red Arrow Studios company. It comes from the same team responsible for the FX and Hulu docuseries The Weekly.
