Blake Lively-Narrated Secrets of the Penguins Coming to Nat Geo

National Geographic has slated the debut of the three-part series Secrets of the Penguins, the latest installment of its Secrets of… franchise, for April 20.

Narrated by Blake Lively (Another Simple Favor), the series sees National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory lead a team of over 70 scientists and filmmakers on a two-year adventure to capture penguins like never before, visiting the rocky beaches of Cape Town, the tropical Galapagos, the desert caves of Namibia and more. A three-person crew even spent 274 days filming on the Ekström Ice Shelf in Antarctica.

The docuseries captures plenty of never-before-seen penguin moments and behavior. For the first time, viewers can witness “rockaroni” chicks, rare hybrids of rockhopper and macaroni penguins. Other scenes include a rockhopper fending off a southern sea lion, the first-ever footage of a hidden cave colony of African penguins and clever Galapagos penguins teaming up to steal fish straight from pelican beaks. In Antarctica, the filmmakers captured a bonded pair of emperor penguins practicing egg transfers with a snowball to hone their skills.

Among the scientists and conservationists who took part in the series are National Geographic Explorer and marine biologist Dr. Pablo Borboroglu, conservation biologist Dr. Michelle LaRue, African penguin expert Dr. Andrea Thiebault, doctor of veterinary medicine Dr. Gustavo Jiménez Uzcátegui, penguin expert Dr. Jessica Kemper and marine biologist Dr. Katta Ludynia.

Secrets of the Penguins is executive produced by National Geographic Explorer-at-Large and Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron and Emmy and BAFTA winners Ruth Roberts and Martin Williams from Talesmith.

The series will debut on National Geographic on April 20, with all episodes streaming on April 21 on Disney+ and Hulu. Disney Channel will celebrate Earth Day on April 22 by airing the first episode.
