MIAMI/BOGOTÁ: Sony Pictures Television and RCN Television are teaming up to co-produce a teleseries based on the life of Colombian film and TV star Lady Tabares.

Titled Lady, La vendedora de rosas, the 70×60-minute series will follow the rise and fall of the actress, who gained international recognition for her starring role in the movie The Rose Seller, but was then convicted at age 20 in the murder of a taxi driver. Production has already begun on location in and around Medellín and Bogotá, with the series due to air on Colombia’s RCN Television. Sony Pictures Television will handle international distribution.

“From the moment we read the first script, we knew we had something wonderfully unique on our hands,” said Angélica Guerra, the senior VP and managing director of production for Latin America and U.S. Hispanic at Sony Pictures Television. “There are many incredible twists and turns that sometimes it is hard to imagine that Lady, La vendedora de rosas is based on a true story. We look forward to taking audiences well beyond the familiar headlines for an intimate and revealing look at Lady Tabares and her fascinating and very touching journey.”

Fernando Gaitán, the VP of international product at RCN Television, added: “The real-life story of Lady Tabares is a wildly compelling yet paradoxical tale that contains the essential elements of a classic melodrama: a protagonist who overcomes a tragic and haunting past to ascend into stardom, only to then again fall and without the pity of those who once embraced her. This is a truly great story with deep connections to our country through film, literature and now television.”

Alexander Marin, the senior VP of distribution for Latin America and U.S. Hispanic at Sony Pictures Television, commented: “As we continue to see unprecedented demand for high-quality, cutting-edge teleseries, we look forward to adding this remarkable new original series to Sony Pictures Television’s extensive and diverse library of content. Given the story’s notoriety and the fact that there is nothing like it currently available in the market, we anticipate there will be tremendous interest in Lady, La vendedora de rosas across Latin America, the U.S. Hispanic market and beyond.”
