Lista Social Wit: May 2017

Of all the programs that debuted across Latin America in May, Las Estrellas on Canal 13 in Argentina stirred up the most buzz on social media, according to The WIT.

Las Estrellas is a telenovela that follows the story of the five sisters of the Estrella family, born from three different mothers. When their father dies and leaves behind a boutique hotel, they must stick together and overcome their differences to manage the family business along with their respective fiancés. The series’ debut on El Trece saw around 13,000 comments on Facebook and Twitter.

Run Coyote Run, which premiered on FX Latin América in Mexico, saw approximately 11,000 tweets. The comedy-drama series tackles in a light way immigration and “polleros” offering their services to those wishing to cross the border between Mexico and the U.S.

The debut of Chile secreto on Chilevision in Chile generated around 8,000 social-media comments. The historical documentary series is presented by author Jorge Baradit, and is an extension of his successful book series Historia Secreta de Chile. Baradit delves into unknown chapters of history and with the help of historians, charts the “revised” portraits of famous Chilean figures hemmed in controversy and mystery.

TV Globo in Brazil launched Conversa com Bial, a late-night show hosted by journalist Pedro Bial. The debut episode saw some 7,000 tweets.

Also on TV Globo, Quem Quer Ser Um Milionário? premiered to around 6,000 comments on social media. This local adaptation of the quiz format Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is featured within the entertainment show Caldeirão do Huck.

There were also around 6,000 tweets about the debut of Nada Personal on Mexico’s Azteca 13. A remake of the telenovela of the same name that aired on the channel in 1996, this political thriller involves the cloudy investigation around the murder of two young journalists.

De vuelta al barrio premiered on América TV in Peru and around 4,000 comments were made about the debut on social media. The family comedy takes place in the ’70s and tells the story of Mónica Sanchez, a woman who returns to live in her native neighborhood 25 years after saying no to her fiancé before the altar.

América TV also debuted Pamela a la tarde last month, garnering around 3,000 tweets. The celebrity talk show sees Pamela David review the world of showbusiness along with panelists, all together in a musical and colorful setting. She then interviews two personalities in each episode in the more intimate setting of a living room, alone with the guest.

The debut of La nocturna on Caracol in Colombia saw around 2,000 tweets. The telenovela follows the adventures of a group of eight people with very different profiles (the young mother, the widow, the peasant, the daddy’s boy…) who attend an evening class at Graham University and hope for better opportunities in life when they graduate.

Also generating around 2,000 tweets, Greg News premiered on HBO Brasil. It is a local adaptation of the talk show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The topical comedy series presents a satirical look at the week in news, politics and current events.
