30-Plus Percent of European On-Demand Services are U.S.-Owned

New data from the European Audiovisual Observatory reveals that one in five private TV channels and more than a third of SVOD and TVOD services in Europe are owned by American companies.

The data comes from the organization’s Audiovisual Media Services in Europe report, authored by Agnes Schneeberger, an analyst within the Observatory’s Department for Market Information. It notes that there were 12,275 different audiovisual media services in wider Europe as of May 2022. of those, 9,080 are linear and 3,195 on-demand.

The U.S. leads in foreign ownership of these services; 19 percent of private TV channels, 38 percent of SVOD platforms and 34 percent of TVOD services. One in four of the top 50 TV groups and more than a third of the top 50 groups for on-demand services has a non-European parent company, the report adds.
