Netflix Reaches 1 Million Subscribers in the U.K. & Ireland

LONDON: Within seven months since its launch in the U.K. and Ireland, Netflix has amassed 1 million subscribers.

According to a recent survey by YouGov for Netflix, 10 percent of the U.K. population now spends two hours or more of their day watching TV shows through the Internet. Comedy and drama are the top two genre choices among the U.K. and Irish members. The highest night for consumption is Sunday.

"This membership milestone is evidence that Netflix has rapidly gained popularity in the U.K. and Ireland," said Reed Hastings, Netflix’s CEO. "Our British and Irish members clearly enjoy the ability to instantly watch a large variety of TV shows and films streaming from Netflix on their favorite devices whenever they want."

TV presenter and gadget expert Pollyanna Woodward commented, "Consumers are beginning to spend more time enjoying entertainment online, streaming TV and film, and this trend is only growing. With services like Netflix, consumers can watch their favorite TV shows and films when and how they want."
