KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian iOS game Lightopus, developed by AppXplore, is available for the iPod, iPhone and iPad platform on a worldwide basis.

Only a few days out, Lightopus is already on the Top 100 Games in the US AppStore portal. It is available initially in English, Spanish, French, Italian and German and will soon be available on the Android mobile platform. Plans are in the works for an animated TV series and for comics and licensing and merchandising. The game, developed by the Malaysian game studio AppXplore, was signed up by the international game publisher BulkyPix based in Paris and San Francisco. It is Malaysia’s first iOS game to be selected by a major game publisher. AppXplore is led by executive director and co-founder Adam Ham—a former executive of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC)—and Desmond Lee, the former producer of Saladin: An Animated Series.

Ham said, “In order to succeed in the increasingly competitive entertainment and media industry, whether it was a game or animation series, it was important that the content should be of the highest quality for global standards, localized and well represented by an international publisher/distributor.”

Kamil Othman, the VP of MDeC added, “The content ecosystem is big and has a wealth of opportunities. While television content is still essential, it was important to recognize that today’s trends are clearly showing that casual gaming and social media is growing significantly, as an extention of modern entertainment.”
