Social Wit List: August 2017

Of all the new programs that premiered globally in August, Multishow’s Canta, Luan was the most-buzzed-about launch, according to The WIT.

The variety entertainment show, broadcast live in Brazil, sees singer Luan Santana invite artists to perform some of his hits. With some 199,000 tweets, Canta, Luan had Twitter and Facebook buzzing with #Fangasm that #LuanCanSingAnything and that the show had the #BestGuestsEver.

Channel 4’s premiere of The Great British Bake Off generated around 161,000 comments on social media. Previously broadcast on BBC Two and then BBC One, the elimination contest features ten amateur chefs baking a range of British delicacies for a panel of judges. There was much #Excitement from the #DelightedAudience, though some were #DividedAbouttheHosts and lobbying to #BringBackMaryBerry.

Coming in at number three on the list, Marvel’s The Defenders is a sci-fi drama series following a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic Marvel characters. Around 98,000 tweets were sent about the premiere on Netflix, with many saying it was #Brilliant and that the characters had great #Chemistry and #WittyBanter.

Syfy’s broadcast of Sharknado 5: Global Swarming saw some 90,000 tweets. The fifth movie in the Sharknado franchise sees the deadly weather phenomenon of shark-infested storms bombard cities around the world. There were plenty of #OMGtweets and #LOLtweets about the #SharkPorn that led up to the #BestEndingEver.

Life of Kylie on E! stirred up some 55,000 social-media comments. The spin-off of the reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians follows Kylie Jenner as she navigates her unique life as an entrepreneur, fashion designer, author, television star, style icon and CEO and founder of Kylie Cosmetics. There was a lot of internet buzz about the young woman’s #InsaneLife and that the show was #SoooGood and a #GuiltyPleasure.

When Love Kills: The Falicia Blakely Story, which debuted on TV One in the U.S., saw around 41,000 tweets. The TV movie charts the unfettered true story of Falicia Blakely, who at the age of 16 met a man 11 years her senior. Within two short years, she would be a prostitute facing the death penalty for three murders. Viewers were tweeting about the #Harrowing, #Gripping and #SickStory.

Netflix’s launch of Death Note had around 41,000 comments on social media as well. The TV movie is adapted from the Japanese animated series Death Note, starring Nat Wolff as a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name. There were plenty of #AngryFans on the internet though, expressing #Disappointment about the program’s #WhiteWashing.

Around 29,000 tweets were sent about Por el mundo on Telefe in Argentina. It is a new version of the factual celebrity-oriented travelogue that aired from 2003 to 2007 in which popular host Marley travels around the world with the biggest Argentine stars. Most of the social-media tweeters thought it was #Hilarious and #PureEntertainment, with Marley displaying #GreatChemistrywiththeGuest.

Kanal D in Turkey launched Meryem to around 19,000 comments. After losing his true love in a tragic accident, Savas does everything to ruin Meryem’s life, believing her to be responsible. Although Meryem is not guilty, she covers for Oktay, the man she loves. The show had social media buzzing about the #Love between the #BeautifulCouple, though there was some #Anger, and talk of the #Soundtrack.

Number ten on the list is La Dream Company, which debuted on TF1 in France. In the show, the host and his team give anonymous people (“the accomplices”) the opportunity to thank or pay tribute to a person they appreciate (“the dreamers”) by enabling them to realize their biggest dream. There were around 17,000 tweets, with a #DividedAudience discussing the #Inspiring and #EmotionalJourney but others thinking the show is #NotSoOriginal.
