Netflix’s You Tops December’s Social Wit List

Of all the new shows that debuted across the world in December, Netflix’s You generated the most buzz on Instagram, according to The WIT.

The psychological thriller bowed on the streaming service on December 26, garnering 936,000 followers, and the series’ main stars Jenna Ortega and Penn Badgley each count 4.9 million and 2.7 million followers, respectively. You previously ran on Lifetime and follows a dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man who goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by.

In second place is The Witcher, also from Netflix, which bowed to 854,000 followers. The fantasy-drama series is based on Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of novels that center on hunters who develop supernatural abilities at a young age to battle deadly monsters. Series star Henry Cavill (Superman) has 9.6 million followers of his own.

Sefirin Kızı (The Ambassador’s Daughter), meanwhile, bowed in on Turkey’s Star TV to 407,000 followers. The romantic drama series tells the tragic love story of Nare and Sancar, who are separated on the night of their wedding by a fatal event. The series stars Neslihan Atagül (8.5 million followers) and Uraz Kaygılaroğlu (925,000).

Fourth on the list is Merlí-Sapere Aude from Movistar+ in Spain, with 98,000 followers. Led by actors Carlos Cuevas (841,000 followers) and David Solans (457,000), the comedy-drama spin-off of TV3’s Merli tells the story of Pol Rubio, the favorite student of philosophy professor Merli, as he starts university a few months after the professor’s death.

Amazon Prime Video’s The Expanse collected 35,000 followers as the fourth season debuted on December 13. The sci-fi series that previously aired on Syfy follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history. It stars Shoreh Aghdashloo (215,000 followers), Frankie Adams (147,000), Wes Chatham (52,000), Dominique Tipper (29,300) and Cas Anvar (19,600).

Dancing on Ice, a new local adaptation of the ice skating contest, previously adapted on RTL4 in 2006, came in sixth with 31,000 followers. Featuring model/actor Donny Roelvink (367,000 followers), dancer and choreographer Juvat Westendorp (55,000), journalist Celine Huijsmans (43,000) and singer Tommie Christiaan (35,000), the series sees nine celebrities form couples with professional dancers and go head to head to convince the jury and the viewers of their ice dancing skills.

Netflix’s Virgin River has 29,000 followers, and its stars Martin Henderson and Alexandra Breckenridge count 420,000 and 316,000, respectively. The contemporary romance series based on Robyn Carr’s book series of the same name is about a woman who moves to a remote town in order to start her life over.

Hekimoglu, the Turkish adaptation of House, follows an irreverent, controversial, devoid-of-bedside-manner doctor who leads a team of young medical experts as they investigate the most complex medical cases. It came in at number eight on the list with 26,000 followers and stars Aytaç Şaşmaz (1.4 million followers), Kaan Yildirim (739,000) and Okan Yalabik (81,000).

Netflix’s Turkish thriller The Gift follows Atiye, a young and beautiful painter who leads a perfect life in Istanbul; everything changes with a discovery made in the most ancient temple on Earth, Gobeklitepe. It has 25,000 followers and stars Beren Saat and Mehmet Günsür have 4.3 million and 880,000 followers, respectively.

Rounding out the list of the top ten buzzy titles is FOX’s Flirty Dancing, which garnered 17,000 followers and is hosted by Jenna Dewan, who boasts 5.9 million followers of her own. The series is a local adaptation of the British dating format that aired on Channel 4 in which a singleton goes on two dates and dances with two complete strangers.
