MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence Awards Set Shortlist

Reed MIDEM has announced the shortlist of programs in the running for the 2019 MIPCOM Diversify TV Excellence Awards, which are dedicated to championing and promoting diverse and inclusive content that can make an impact on wide audiences.

This year’s 21 nominated programs, all of which have been broadcast in the last 12 months, have been recognized by the pre-selection jury for providing a fair and accurate representation of BAME, LGBTQ+ and disabled communities; and standing out for originality and excellence in storytelling, casting and production values, challenging stereotypes and showing a positive impact.

Nominated for the MIPCOM Diversify TV’s Excellence Awards for LGBTQ+ representation are The Bold Type, Vida and Younger for scripted; and The Origins of Pride, Transkids and You Can’t Ask That for unscripted.

Scripted series Jerk, Perfect World and This Close and the unscripted series If There’s Room for Two, No Drama—Bernarda Alba and No Vacancy: Vancouver’s Housing Crisis are nominated for their representations of disability. The scripted series nominated for their representation of race and ethnicity are Ackley Bridge, Isoken and Kiss Me First, while African Diaspora Diaries, Breaking the Taboo—Racism and Resistance and The Curry House Kid make up the unscripted category.

Lastly, the nominees for the MIPCOM Diversify TV’s Excellence Award for kids’ programming are Rainbow Stories, The Bravest Knight and What It’s Like.

Among the organizations that will be choosing the winning programs are GADIM, GLAAD, ILGA-Europe, Minority Rights, Race Equality Foundation, SCOPE, Show Racism the Red Card and Sporting Equals.

The third edition of the awards will be held on Monday, October 14, at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes. The invitation-only event for some 200 leading TV executives is held in partnership with A+E Networks and Diversify TV.
