U.S. SVOD Subs to Top 300 Million by 2025

Digital TV Research is forecasting the number of U.S. SVOD subscriptions to climb from 199 million in 2019 to 307 million by 2025, a gain of 108 million subs.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “The average SVOD household will pay for 3.28 SVOD platforms by 2025, up from 2.28 at end-2019. So, the average SVOD home will add one subscription between 2019 and 2025.”

Murray continued: “A dozen platforms will have more than 5 million paying subscribers by 2025—revealing just how far ahead in terms of choice the U.S. market is compared with the rest of the world. Growth for established players such as Netflix and Hulu will be muted due to intense competition from younger rivals such as Disney+, Peacock and the augmented CBS All Access.”

Netflix stood at an estimated 61 million subs in 2019, with gains to 65.7 million by 2025 forecasted. Amazon, which was at 54 million in 2019, is poised to reach 61.1 million by 2025. Disney+ had 17 million subs in 2019, with growth forecast to hit 48 million by 2025. Hulu, which had 27.2 million subs, is set to reach 40.5 million. HBO Now, with 10 million in 2019, is forecast to hit 22.1 million. Peacock, launching this year, is targeted for 12.3 million subs by 2025. Apple TV+, which saw 400,000 subs in launch-year 2019, is being estimated to hit 5.5 million by 2025. YouTube TV had 2 million subscribers last year, and the forecast is for it to reach 5.8 million by 2025.
