TV Screen Remains Dominant Platform for Consuming Content

NEW YORK: The average American watches around five hours of video each day, of which 98 percent is viewed on a traditional TV set, according to Nielsen’s latest Cross-Platform Report.

In the last year, the number of homes with an HDTV grew by more than 8 million. Watching traditional television (live and timeshifted) remains the bulk of activity on the TV set, accounting for more than 33 hours per week. Following several years of consistent year-on-year growth, traditional TV viewing declined by half a percentage point, or 46 minutes per month. The average time spent with live TV is 4 hours 35 minutes per day. DVR accounts for only 22 minutes, followed by game consoles at 13 minutes and DVDs at 11 minutes.
