Event Preview: NATPE

NEW YORK: NATPE, which kicks off next week, marks its 50th anniversary event with what is expected to be its largest-ever attendance in its new home in Miami.

As of last month, buyer registration was 30-percent-plus ahead of the 2012 edition, and some 300 companies are set to exhibit at the Fontainebleau, either in suites or on the market floor.

The festivities kick off Monday morning with an opening keynote by Mark Cuban, followed by a keynote conversation on branded entertainment featuring Subway’s chief marketing officer, Tony Pace, Content & Co.’s Stuart McLean and director Jamie Widdoes. Other highlights of the Monday morning schedule include a session on the impact of new technologies on the TV business model, with YouTube’s Alex Carloss, Lionsgate’s Kevin Beggs and Aereo’s Chet Kanojia, among others, and Ross Levinsohn in conversation with Larry King. The afternoon sessions include a panel with online video executives and a case study on Cybergeddon, Anthony Zuiker’s series for Yahoo!

Tuesday morning, Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award winner Steve Levitan will discuss his series Modern Family as part of the Storytellers That Shaped the Face of Pop Culture strand, which later on Tuesday will also feature Glen Mazzara and Damon Lindelof; Pam Veasey and Wendy West; Dick Wolf and Howard Gordon; and Anthony Zuiker and Tim Kring, among others. The 10th Annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards will be presented on Tuesday night.

Wednesday morning, Tartikoff honoree Herbert Kloiber will kick off the Global Navigators strand. In conversation with World Screen’s Anna Carugati, Kloiber will discuss his success in building Tele München Group into one of Germany’s leading production and distribution outfits. The Global Navigators strand also includes a session on Spanish-language television featuring executives from Univision, Telemundo and MundoFox, and one on formats with representatives from Shine, Banijay, CBS Studios International, ITV Studios, ALL3MEDIA and Electus. Later in the day, John Morayniss from Entertainment One, Jens Richter from Red Arrow and ITV Studios Global Entertainment’s Maria Kyriacou will discuss international scripted co-productions.
