Historian and broadcaster David Olusoga has launched his own production company, Hillgate Films, securing a deal with BBC Studios.

Hillgate will roll out history-focused documentaries, formats and series, with and without Olusoga as on-screen talent. BBC Studios has struck a development deal with the outfit in return for a first-look on distribution rights.

The venture is being established as a co-producer rather than a standalone producer so that it can focus on larger-scale projects while leaving Olusoga the creative freedom to concentrate on the content itself.

Olusoga said: “I’m excited to launch Hillgate Films and begin this new chapter of producing and presenting projects that challenge, educate and engage audiences. We want to explore the untold stories from history, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with the forward-thinking and dynamic team at BBC Studios. I’m passionate about creating work that brings fresh perspectives to light, and I believe we have an incredible opportunity to do that with Hillgate Films. Hillgate’s first two projects are in production and with a development deal with BBC Studios in place, we’re ready to grow and scale the company, and have ambitious plans for the future.”

Ben Hall, previously global director of programs at Motion Content Group, joins the company as managing director. He commented, “It’s an exciting time to be launching Hillgate Films. David’s track record as a storyteller and historian speaks for itself, and I’m delighted to be working with him to bring important and engaging stories to audiences.”

Kate Ward, managing director for unscripted productions at BBC Studios, added,  “David has a proven track record of telling bold and nuanced stories from history that resonate globally and can drive conversations and change perspectives. We are delighted to be continuing our long working relationship and look forward to continuing success with David and Hillgate in the future.”
