SAN FRANCISCO: Global streaming platform Viki has launched a Portuguese-language service.

The rollout is part of an effort to offer a more customized experience to users in Brazil, one of Viki’s top five viewing markets, and other Portuguese-speaking populations around the world. According to the company, Latin America now accounts for more than 30 percent of its total watch-time minutes, second only to North America. Viki is also available in English, Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese.

More than 5,000 titles are available to users in Latin America, including Korean and Chinese dramas. To further boost its presence in Brazil, Viki is also in discussions with several companies in the region for partnerships related to its subscription service offering.

“Viki’s vision has always been to break down barriers by introducing people to new cultures via popular entertainment,” said Tammy H. Nam, Viki’s CEO. “Our volunteer community of fans have subtitled content into more than 200 languages; subtitling activity in Portuguese has grown 58 percent since last year and now accounts for the fourth most popular subtitle language on Viki after English, Spanish and French.”
