SÃO PAULO: Globo and NHK have partnered to present live 8K screenings during the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

The screenings, which are open to the public, will showcase the advanced image resolution of 8K technology. The presentations will be held at Rio de Janeiro’s Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow) and will include broadcasts of the opening and closing ceremonies and several games.

“We are still consolidating the migration of the TV viewers to HD digital TV in Brazil, but the technological evolution does not wait, and the Globo team have been studying the next generation of technologies for free-to-air TV,” said Raymundo Barros, the CTO of Globo. “Such action reinforces the importance of free-to-air TV and its evolution to a more immersive experience with UHD.”

Globo began its experiences in 8K with the 2013 Brazilian Carnival, and the following year with the 2014 FIFA World Cup, broadcasting live matches via fiber optic transmission in partnership with NHK. This is the first live terrestrial transmission in 8K available in Brazil.
