Netflix Opens Madrid Hub

Netflix’s first European production hub, in Tres Cantos, Madrid, is now officially open, with the streamer unveiling two new Spanish originals.

Netflix is making a multi-million euro investment in Spanish-language content, announcing two new originals, El inocente and El crimen del siglo. These join a portfolio that includes La casa de papel, Alta Mar, Las chicas del cable, Paquita Salas, Elite and Criminal, plus a slate of films.

“Our aim is to be part of the Spanish creative ecosystem,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings at the hub’s opening. “We are investing for the long term; we are here to stay and to participate. Our goal is to work with the best storytellers to create great shows and films that delight our members. It’s been amazing to see Spanish shows like Elite and La casa de papel win the hearts of fans not just in Spain, but globally. This is our first European production hub, and we’re excited about the great stories that will be produced here in Spain and watched by the world.”

Francisco Ramos, VP of international originals, added, “Bringing our unique and personal stories of diverse genres and formats to every corner represents a great opportunity for our creative community.”

El inocente is an eight-part adaptation of Harlan Coben’s bestseller, created by Oriol Paulo. Los Favoritos de Midas is a six-parter based on short story by Jack London, created by Mateo Gil and Miguel Barros.
