Global IPTV Market Hits Nearly 90 Million Subs

LONDON: At the end of June, there were 87.2 million IPTV subscribers around the world, according to research company Point Topic, which reports slower growth in mature markets such as North America, Western Europe and Asia.

The Q2 2013 figure of 87.1 million is up by 24 percent from the same period a year prior, meaning 17 million net additions.

While mature IPTV markets are showing slower growth, the smaller markets in Eastern Europe, Latin and Central America and Oceania are growing rapidly in the IPTV space. There are currently 14.2 million IPTV subscribers in France and 11.22 million in the U.S., followed by South Korea (7.5 million) and Japan (4 million). Other markets with high IPTV subs are Russia (2.8 million), Germany (2.5 million), the Netherlands (1.6 million) and the U.K. (1.5 million).

The U.K., however, has seen a dramatic increase in its subscriber figures in the quarter, with provider TalkTalk continuing to add subs to its YouView service. The U.K. has edged out Taiwan in the top 10 ranking for IPTV subscribers this time around.
