Report: IPTV Gaining Pay-TV Market Share

SINGAPORE: A new survey from ABI Research forecasts the global pay-TV market to grow from $238 billion in 2012 to $304 billion in 2018.

The $238 billion generated in 2012 is up from the $223 billion in 2011. If the market reaches $304 billion by 2018, CAGR will be 4 percent.

Globally, IPTV is increasing its market share, while the rest of the pay-TV platforms are contracting. IPTV service revenue market share increased from 10 percent in 2011 to 11.5 percent in 2012. During the same period, cable TV market share dropped from 48.5 percent to 47 percent. Satellite TV market show dipped around 1 percent. “Availability of super-fast broadband networks and bundle offers from telcos over high-speed networks are driving the growth of IPTV adoption. IPTV market share is expected to increase to 18 percent in 2018, to generate $53 billion in revenue,” said Jake Saunders, VP and practice director of core forecasting.

“Based on ABI Research’s global Pay-TV market share analysis, satellite giant DirecTV ranks top in terms of pay-TV service revenue across all platforms. In the global IPTV sector, Verizon is the top ranked IPTV operator with the highest service revenue,” added Khin Sandi Lynn, research analyst.
