Social Wit List: November 2018

Of all the new programs to launch around the world in November, TV Globo’s O Sétimo Guardião garnered the most buzz on social media, according to The WIT.

TV Globo’s fantasty novela is set in a village that hides a remarkable oddity: a water source with healing and rejuvenating properties, protected by seven guards. There were some 54,000 Facebook and Twitter comments during the premiere episode, with viewers #LovingTheCreepyVibe but wondering if #MaybeItIsTooScary. There was also talk about the #DelightfulSoundtrack and much #KudosToActressMarinaRuyBarbosa.

Kanal D in Turkey debuted Muhteşem İkili to around 43,000 tweets. The police comedy drama follows the investigations led by two opposite cops, Barca, who is part of a unit fighting organized crime on the Asian side of the city, and MKC, a flamboyant cop who occupies the same position on the European side. Viewers tweeting about the #Fun and #FamilyFriendly show thought #ActorIbrahimCelikkolDeservesApplause.

The debut of Dynasties on BBC One in the U.K. saw some 21,000 comments. The wildlife documentary series, hosted by world-renowned naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, looks at five different animal species—lions, African hunting dogs, chimpanzees, tigers and emperor penguins—as they set out to build a group, a family, a troop. The #StunningCamerawork in the #HighQualityDocumentary was among the talking points, as was the #BrilliantWorkBySirAttenborough.

Netflix’s release of Super Drags drummed up approximately 18,000 comments. The Brazilian adult animated series is about Patrick, Donny and Ralph, who by day work in a shabby business but at night, the three drag queens put on their most beautiful corsets and arrest criminals. Many of the viewers tweeting alongside the debut thought it was #Hilarious and were #LovingTheGayEmpowermentVibe, leaving them to question #WhyOnlyFiveEpisodes.

Mai dire Talk on Italia 1 in Italy had some 14,000 tweets. The talk show sees the host and a trio of comedians comment on the latest news, sports events, movies and TV shows in voice-over. There were some #MixedFeelings regarding the #ZanyHost, #Funny content and #UselessCelebrityGuests, with comments that it was #NotLikeTheOtherMaiDireShows.

PPTV’s The Voice Thailand also garnered around 14,000 Facebook and Twitter comments. The new adaptation of the talent search format, which previously aired on Channel 3 for six seasons between 2012 and 2018, was #HighlyAnticipated. Viewers were rallying to have #SomeoneFixTheLiveStream and noted the #LowBudgetStage but #GoodPerformancesNevertheless.

There were some 12,000 tweets about Hallmark Channel’s Christmas in Love. In the movie, an aspiring crafter working in her small town bakery making Christmas Kringles encounters the new big-city CEO who is filled with modernization ideas destined to lay off many employees. Viewers were #LovingTheCharacters in the #Fun watch, with some asking #AreKringlesReal?

BBC Two’s Louis Theroux’s Altered States saw around 12,000 tweets as well. The doc series explores the unusual ways modern America deals with birth, love and death. There were some #AwkwardMoments that made the show an #UncomfortableWatch, but the #InterestingDocumentary had viewers praising the host: #LouisTherouxIsGenius.

Netflix debuted Outlaw King to around 11,000 social media comments. The period TV movie about the legendary King of Scots Robert the Bruce was #BloodyBrutal and had #GoodPerformances and #GreatBattleScenes.

Hallmark had another holiday movie, A Shoe Addict’s Christmas, land on the list, this one at number ten. The romance TV movie is about a woman at a crossroads in her life. She accidentally gets locked in a department store after closing and ends up meeting a quirky woman who says she’s her guardian angel. There were some 10,000 tweets, with #KudosToActressCandaceCameronBure and nods to the #AmazingOutfits and #CuteLoveStory.
