Social Wit List: July 2017

Of all the programs that launched globally in July, Disney Channel’s Raven’s Home was the most-buzzed-about new show on social media, according to The WIT.

With some 54,000 tweets, Raven’s Home ranked number one for its number of Facebook and Twitter comments during the premiere episode. The spin-off of the teen sitcom That’s So Raven focuses on Raven as a divorced mother to two preteen kids, one of whom has inherited her ability to catch glimpses of the future. Many #LongTimeFans were #NotDisappointed by the show, which they found to be #StillHilarious and gave #Kudos to on social media.

Dolunay on Star TV in Turkey garnered around 34,000 tweets. The series tells the love story of Nazlı, a young woman who dreams of becoming a chef and learning Japanese cuisine, and Ferit, a businessman who hires her as a cook. There was #MostlyPraise for the #Addictive show, which some found #TooShallow while others were engaged with the #EntertainingRomance.

Brazil’s TV Globo debuted Sob Pressão to around 31,000 social media comments. The drama series based on the 2016 theatrical blockbuster follows the hectic daily routine of a public health unit located in a shantytown. Comments were that the #GreatDrama featured #AmazingDoctors that were #SoHuman and #Realistic.

BBC One’s one-off airing of The Betrayed Girls also ranked high for social media buzz. The documentary follow-up to the drama Three Girls looks at three sexual abuse survivors who were ignored by the authorities and whose stories went unheard for years. There were around 29,000 tweets about the broadcast, which many found to be a #Heartbreaking and #Appalling #InsaneStory that stirred up a #RacialDebate.

Also a one-off, Earth Live! saw approximately 28,000 tweets. The live event hosted by Jane Lynch and simultaneously broadcast across Nat Geo’s international channels looked at Earth’s greatest wildlife, shot in real time by prestigious cinematographers. Social media was buzzing about the #GreatFormat and #Fascinating subjects captured with #AwesomePhotography, though there were #MixedFeelingsAboutHost.

Las cloacas de Interior on Gol in Spain generated around 27,000 comments. The documentary chronicles a nine-month investigation into corruption in the Interior Ministry. Many tweeting about the show were surprised by the #UnbelievableCorruption and found it #Shameless, leaving them to question #HowCouldWeVoteforThem.

Discovery Channel’s one-off stunt Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White saw around 24,000 tweets. The event documentary that aired as part of Shark Week pitted the world’s most decorated athlete against the ocean’s most efficient predator. There was #Excitement on social media, with many giving their #Predictions about the winner, which stirred up a ton of comments when the #SharkWonbyTwoSeconds.

Haplos, which debuted on GMA Network in the Philippines, stirred up some 23,000 comments. The telenovela revolves around Angela and Lucille, half sisters who both possess superpowers: one can heal with her touch while the other causes pain. The #AttractiveCouple, the sisters’ #FascinatingPowers and the #FirstKissScene all had social media buzzing.

In Turkey, Kanal D’s debut of Çocuklar Duymasin garnered around 18,000 Facebook and Twitter comments. It is a sequel to the eponymous series that aired from 2001 to 2005 on Star TV, in 2010 on ATV and in 2013 on FOX, following the life of a family in which the parents are separated but not divorced. There were #DividedReviews on social media, with some #HappyAbouttheComeback and others who thought it was #MuchBetterBefore, mentioning the #OveractingCast.

Number ten on the list is The Bold Type, which launched on Freeform in the U.S. The drama series inspired by the life of Cosmopolitan Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles offers a glimpse into the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for a global women’s magazine. There were around 16,000 tweets about the #Inspiring, #Stylish and #Entertaining first episode.
