Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow Leads October’s Social Wit List

Of all the new programs that debuted in October, Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow generated the most buzz on Instagram, according to The WIT.

The hip-hop competition series from John Legend, Jesse Collins and Jeff Gaspin sees judges Cardi B, T.I. and Chance The Rapper search for the country’s next breakout hip-hop star in New York, Chicago, L.A. and Atlanta. It’s garnered 365,000 Instagram followers since its October 9 debut, and the celebrity judges each have respectable followings of their own—Cardi B has 53.7 million followers, Chance The Rapper has 10.7 million and T.I. has 11.5 million.

Coming in second is Amazon’s De viaje con los Derbez (Derbez Family Vacation), which bowed on the streaming service on October 18 to 325,000 followers. The reality series follows Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez (12.1 million followers) and his family as they leave together for an exciting trip to Morocco.

The U.K. version of RuPaul’s Drag Race debuted on October 3 on BBC Three, spotlighting ten drag artists judged in various aspects of their art by a panel of three celebrities. Drag Race U.S. judges RuPaul (3.5 million followers) and Michelle Visage (1.4 million) join British late-night show host Graham Norton (415,000) in the adaptation, which collected 287,000 followers.

Russia’s Plan B from TNT has 208,000 followers. The dating-reality series sees two celebrities and long-time friends take the bet to find the perfect match for each other. The candidates are faced with several challenges that assess their compatibility with their potential loved one. Hosts Olga Buzova and Timur Batrutdinov each have a strong social media presence, with 16.4 million and 1.9 million followers, respectively.

The fifth spot on the list goes to The CW’s Batwoman, which earned 136,000 followers, and its star Ruby Rose has 14.4 million of her own. Rose stars as Kate Kane, who soars onto the streets of Gotham as the titular character, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.

Fuji TV’s Sherlock follows crime consultant Sherlock Holmes, who meets hospital worker and psychiatrist John Watson through a case he takes. It bowed in Japan on October 7, gathering 120,000 followers, with stars Takanori Iwata and Dean Fujioka counting 2.5 million and 523,000 followers of their own, respectively.

Watchmen, a fantasy series based on the Alan Moore graphic novel, is set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws and where police conceal their identities behind masks to protect themselves. Premiering on HBO in the U.S. on October 20, it got over 101,000 followers and its stars Regina King (1.6 million followers) and Don Johnson (167,000) are Instagram-famous in their own right.

Rolling in at number eight is Netflix’s Daybreak, which stars Colin Ford (296,000 followers), Sophie Simnett (261,000) and Gregory Kasyan (232,000). The fantasy series, adapted from the graphic novel of the same name, follows 17-year-old high school outcast Josh as he searches for his missing girlfriend Sam in post-apocalyptic Glendale, California. It garnered 67,000 followers.

Also coming in at 67,000 followers is Hulu’s Looking for Alaska, a drama series adapted from John Green’s best-selling novel that centers on teenager Miles “Pudge” Halter, who tries to uncover the truth behind the death of his friend Alaska. Green has 2 million followers of his own, and the main star Kristine Froseth has 1.1 million.

Rounding out the list with 66,000 followers is Brazil’s Mestre do Sabor, which bowed on Globo on October 10. The cookery competition follows as 24 chefs compete through six different rounds. Host and chef Claude Troisgros counts 440,000 followers.
