Amazon Sets New Projects with Nicole Kidman, Russo Brothers & More

Among the new projects unveiled by Amazon Studios is The Expatriates, from Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films, as well as an international event series with the Russo brothers.

Based on the best-selling novel by Janice Y.K. Lee, The Expatriates will explore the lives of a close-knit group of women expatriates living in Hong Kong. The drama marks the first project to come out of Amazon Studios’ first-look film and TV deal with Kidman’s company.

Amazon also has in the works a horror anthology from Lena Waithe (The Chi, Dear White People), with a two-season deal already inked. Written by Little Marvin, the first season, titled Them: Covenant, is set in the early 1950s and centers on a black couple who move their family from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood. Waithe will executive produce.

The Russo brothers (Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: Civil War) and their AGBO Studios label are working with Amazon on a large-scope, multi-layered international event series. The idea is that the original series will function as a catalyst to ignite the creation of multiple original local-language and locally produced series.

Amazon Studios also greenlit a half-hour sci-fi romantic satire, Upload, from Emmy Award-winner Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation, King of the Hill) and his producing partner Howard Klein (The Office, Parks and Recreation, King of the Hill). It will star Andy Allo (Pitch Perfect 3) and Robbie Amell (The X-Files).

A premiere date has now been set for the original anthology series The Romanoffs, created, written, directed and executive produced by Matthew Weiner (Mad Men). The series, set around the globe, features eight separate stories about people who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. It will debut October 12.
