OAKBOOK TERRACE: The online streaming service launched by DVD kiosk operator Redbox and telco Verizon in March of last year is being shuttered this week "because it was not as successful as we hoped it would be," the companies said in a statement posted to the Redbox Instant website.

The plug is being pulled on the streaming platform at the end of the day tomorrow. Subscribers who paid for a full month of service after September 8, 2014, will be issued a refund of the monthly fee. The service says it is "exploring options for customers who purchased electronic versions of on-demand movies."

The service came out of beta last March. For a monthly fee it provided streaming access to movies.
