Nielsen: 88 Percent of Americans Binge-Watch on Netflix

NEW YORK: New analysis from Nielsen confirms that OTT video viewing is on the rise in the U.S., as American consumers are increasingly “binge” viewing via these services.

Nielsen reports that 88 percent of Netflix users and 70 percent of Hulu Plus users report streaming three or more episodes of the same TV show in one day.

This is reinforced by consumers’ desire to curate their own content lineup. Around 58 percent of these users prefer to watch shows when they do not have to abide by schedules other than their own and can watch several episodes consecutively.

The percentage of people in the U.S. subscribing to Netflix is at 38 percent, compared to 31 percent the year prior. The percentage for Hulu is 18 percent, compared to 12 percent in 2012; basic Hulu is 12 percent vs 2012’s 9 percent; and Hulu Plus is 6 percent, compared to the previous 4 percent. Amazon Prime Instant Video has 13 percent, nearly double the 2012 figure.
