NBC News Digital Sets Up Original Video Unit

NEW YORK: NBC News Digital Group has established an original video unit, with an in-house production team dedicated to creating video for social media, mobile and the web.

The unit will create video for brands such as NBC News Digital and TODAY Digital. Bill Smee will be leading the team as executive producer of original video production. Smee joins NBC News in September and was previously the executive producer of Slate V. Smee will report to Gregory Gittrich, the VP of news and product for NBC News Digital and executive editor of NBCNews.com.

“The NBCUniversal News Group is already an industry leader in streaming clips from our television programing. We will now have an additional focus on original video that extends the news division’s on-air and digital brands,” said Vivian Schiller, the senior VP and chief digital officer of NBC News. “As an award-winning television journalist and a natural-born digital video storyteller, Bill is the perfect person to lead this effort.”

"We’re building on the NBC News legacy of world-class video storytelling. Bill is a rare talent, and his expertise and innovative spirit will help change the way we tell and deliver stories," added Gittrich. "Our original video unit will share important, unique and undiscovered stories while entertaining our audience."
