NBC Ups Shelby Shaftel to SVP of Alternative Programming & Development

Shelby Shaftel has been promoted to the role of senior VP of alternative programming and development at NBC as the company looks to solidify its leadership team.

In her new position, Shaftel will direct creative, staffing decisions, talent, marketing and high-level brand partnerships as she spearheads projects from concept through post-production. She currently oversees a portfolio of tentpole shows for the network that includes The Titan Games with Dwayne Johnson, Making It with Amy Poehler and The Wall, executive produced by LeBron James. Shaftel is also managing a slate of projects in various stages of development and searching for adaptation opportunities across the international television marketplace.

Shaftel, who joined NBC in 2006 and most recently served as VP of alternative programming and development at the network, will continue to report to Jenny Groom, the head of NBC’s alternative department.

Groom said: “Shelby has played an integral role in our department’s success over the last several years, having helped shepherd and launch some of our biggest franchises, including The Voice. She’s an excellent storyteller with incredible creative instincts. Her deep understanding of our brand and the television landscape are invaluable and we’re very fortunate to have her on our team to help develop and usher in the next generation of game-changing content for NBC.”
