FilmRise to Rep Simon Baker Movie in the U.S.

FilmRise has snapped up the exclusive U.S. distribution rights for Breath, which marks the feature directorial debut of The Mentalist star Simon Baker.

Set in Western Australia during the 1970s, Breath follows two teen boys as they befriend an older surfer (played by Baker), who encourages them to take dangerous risks. The movie is based on Tin Winton’s best-selling book of the same name. It is slated to make its theatrical premiere next year.

Co-starring alongside Baker are Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Richard Roxburgh (Moulin Rouge), Samson Coulter and Ben Spence. The film was produced by Mark Johnson, Baker and Jamie Hilton, and executive produced by Tom Williams, Dave Hansen, Johnny Mac and Laura Rister. The screenplay was penned by Gerard Lee, Baker and Winton.

Baker stated: “It’s incredible to know that American audiences will now have the opportunity to experience Breath in its full cinematic glory, and I’m excited to be working with FilmRise to foster a successful release.”

Danny Fisher, the CEO and president of FilmRise, added: “Simon Baker co-wrote, directed and co-stars in this dark and beautiful adaptation of an iconic novel from his native land, Australia. He portrays this intimate and at times challenging story of both the wonders and dangers of becoming an adult in a beautiful, stark and unexpected light. We are proud to bring this moving film to U.S. audiences next year.”
