Premium Cable Shines at the Golden Globes

LOS ANGELES: Showtime and HBO both cleaned up at last night’s Golden Globe Awards, with Homeland and Girls picking up the best drama and comedy awards, respectively.

The Showtime series Homeland swept the drama categories, winning best series and both performance nods, one for Damian Lewis and the other for Claire Danes. Don Cheadle, of Showtime’s House of Lies, won for best actor in a comedy or musical as well.

HBO’s Girls won for best comedy, and star Lena Dunham was given the award for best comedic lead. Game Change scored three more wins for HBO, one for best mini-series/TV movie; one for best actress in a mini-series/TV movie, for Julianne Moore; and another for best supporting actor, for Ed Harris.

Maggie Smith of PBS’s Downton Abbey won on the female supporting side. Kevin Costner, of HISTORY’s Hatfields & McCoys, was the winner for best actor in a mini-series/TV movie.

In motion pictures, Argo was named best drama, while Les Misérables won for best comedy or musical. Ben Affleck took the directorial win for Argo as well. Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway (supporting) both received performance wins for Les Misérables. Jennifer Lawrence won for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. Daniel Day-Lewis was the leading male actor in a drama for Lincoln, with Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jessica Chastain winning in the female performance category. The supporting actor statue went to Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained, which also picked up a win for best screenplay for Quentin Tarantino. The night’s best animated feature winner was Brave. Amour from Austria took home the win for best foreign film.
