Coronation Street Leads Noms for British National Television Awards

LONDON: Coronation Street has received four nominations for this year’s National Television Awards, while Doctor Who, EastEnders and Emmerdale follow with three nods each.

The period drama Downton Abbey scored its first National Television Award nomination, facing off in the drama category with Doctor Who, Merlin and last year’s winner, Waterloo Road. For serial drama, the contenders are Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. In the drama performance categories, Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith, Torchwood‘s John Barrowman, Doc Martin‘s Martin Clunes and Shameless‘s David Threlfall are up for best actor. Best female performance drama contenders are Doctor Who‘s Karen Gillan, Torchwood‘s Eve Myles, Waterloo Road‘s Jaye Jacobs and Scott & Bailey‘s Suranne Jones. For serial drama, the nominees are Katherine Kelly and Alison King of Coronation Street, Danny Miller of Emmerdale and Jessie Wallace of EastEnders. Up for best newcomer are Chris Fountain for Coronation Street, Chelsea Halfpenny for Emmerdale and Jacqueline Jossa for EastEnders.

In the reality category, The Only Way is Essex faces off with I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here, Come Dine with Me and The Apprentice. Talent shows in competition are The X Factor, Strictly Come Dancing, Dancing on Ice and Britain’s Got Talent. The Jonathan Ross Show is nominated for best talk show alongside The Graham Norton Show, Alan Carr: Chatty Man and Loose Women. Michael McIntyre, Dermot O’Leary, Ant & Dec and Keith Lemon are vying for the win for best entertainment presenter. The shows battling for the award for best entertainment program are Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Dynamo: Magician Impossible, Harry Hilly’s TV Burp and Take Me Out. Panel game show nominees are Celebrity Juice, QI, Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You. Benidorm, Miranda and Outnumbered are nominated for situation comedy. Factual programs given NTA nods are An Idiot Abroad, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, This Morning and Top Gear.

The National Television Awards will be broadcast live from London’s O2 Arena on UTV on January 25.
