Telefónica has won the battle for the bulk of the broadcast rights to La Liga football in Spain.

La Liga says it has reached deals on four of eight packages of rights for a total of €3.4 billion (an average of €1.1 billion per season). This is 15 percent higher than the intake for the same four packages in the previous rights auction.

Telefónica paid €2.9 billion for its two lots. “Thanks to these rights, Telefónica will continue to count on the widest content offer for the coming years and, in addition, it has reinforced the control over the content that is broadcast on its platform,” the telco giant said in a statement. “Telefónica’s technological capabilities will allow the company to introduce new improvements to the product in order to increase its appeal to fans.”

Mediapro also secured two packages of rights domestically. In addition, La Liga renewed its contract with Mediapro for the sale of international audiovisual rights during the next five seasons (2019-20 to 2023-24). La Liga is guaranteed €4.5 billion in revenue from international audiovisual rights during the next five seasons, which is 30 percent more than in the previous three-year period.
