BBC Channels Join Orange in Romania

LONDON: BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge and BBC World News are to be carried as part of the Universe HD tier on the recently launched Orange Romania DTH TV service.

BBC Knowledge is already present in a number of markets across CEE, including Cyprus, Hungary and Slovenia, as well as in Romania. Through Orange, shows such as Frozen Planet, Bang Goes the Theory and Secret Life of Dinosaurs will be available to subscribers of the Romanian platform. BBC Entertainment launched in Romania on its pan-European feed in 2009. BBC World News has been present in the country for more than ten years.

Ian McDonough, the executive VP for Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa at BBC Worldwide, said: “Following the successful launch of BBC Knowledge in Romania earlier this year, it’s very pleasing to see that there’s demand for BBC channels on this exciting new platform. Our channels are rapidly becoming more established throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Expect to see more announcements in the coming months.”

Colin Lawrence, the distribution director for BBC Global News, added: “We already have a high level of appreciation for BBC News from audiences in many Eastern European markets, so I’m delighted by this new opportunity and welcome the extension of our relationship with Orange.”

Julien Ducarroz, the CCO of Orange Romania, commented: “We’re pleased to be partnering with BBC Worldwide and BBC World News in Romania. Given the BBC’s excellent global reputation for entertainment, factual and news programming, these channels form a vital part of that offering.”
