Appropriate Adult Notches Up Most BAFTA TV Noms

LONDON: The ITV drama Appropriate Adult, about serial killer Fred West, scored four nominations for the 2012 BAFTA television awards, including nods for best actor and best actress.

The lead actor category features Dominic West for his role in Appropriate Adult, alongside Benedict Cumberbatch for Sherlock, John Simm for Exile and Joseph Gilgun for This is England ’88. In the best actress category, Appropriate Adult‘s Emily Watson is nominated along with Nadine Marshall of Random, Romola Garai of The Crimson Petal and the White and Vicky McClure of This is England ’88. Supporting nods went to actors Andrew Scott and Martin Freeman for Sherlock, Joseph Mawle for Birdsong and Stephen Rea for The Shadowline. Supporting actress nominations went to Anna Chancellor for The Hour, Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey, Miranda Hart for Call the Midwife and Monica Dolan for Appropriate Adult.

The performance category for entertainment features the nominees Alan Carr for Alan Carr Chatty Man, Dara O’Briain for Mock the Week, Graham Norton for The Graham Norton Show and Harry Hill for Harry Hill’s TV Burp. In the comedy arena, best actress nods went to Jennifer Saunders for Absolutely Fabulous, Olivia Colman for Twenty Twelve, Ruth Jones for Stella and Tamsin Greig for Friday Night Dinner. The male nominees are Brendan O’Carroll for Mrs. Brown’s Boys, Darren Boyd for Spy, Hugh Bonneville for Twenty Twelve and Tom Hollander for Rev.

Appropriate Adult is also up for best mini-series, competing with The Crimson Petal and the White, This is England ’88 and Top Boy. The drama series category features The Fades, Misfits, Scott and Bailey and Spooks. The contenders for best single drama are Holy Flying Circus, Page Eight, Random and Stolen, while soap/continuing drama nominees are Coronation Street, EastEnders, Holby City and Shameless.

Modern Family is up for best international series, facing competition from Borgen, The Killing and The Slap. In the factual arena, The Choir: Military Wives is up against Educating Essex, Our War and Protecting Our Children: Damned If We Do Damned If We Don’t. Specialist factual contenders are British Masters, Frozen Planet, Mummifying Alan: Egypt’s Last Secret and Wonders of the Universe.

An Idiot Abroad is nominated in the category for reality/constructed factual, which also features Don’t Tell the Bride, Made in Chelsea and The Young Apprentice. Celebrity Juice, Derren Brown: The Experiments, Harry Hill’s TV Burp and Michael McIntyre’s Christmas Comedy Roadshow will compete for the win for best entertainment program.

The comedy contenders are Charlie Brooker’s 2011 Wipe, Comic Strip: The Hunt for Tony Blair, The Cricklewood Greats and Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. Up for best situation comedy are Fresh Meat, Mrs. Brown’s Boys, Friday Night Dinner and Rev.
