JOHANNESBURG: Dynamic Television has acquired the worldwide distribution rights for the landmark Nelson Mandela miniseries Madiba, which stars Laurence Fishburne (Black-ish, The Matrix trilogy) as the late South African leader.

The six-hour event series is based on two Mandela books, Conversations with Myself and Nelson Mandela by Himself. Madiba is set to premiere on BET Networks in the U.S. in 2017.

Principal photography for Madiba begins April 4 and will run to June 1 in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Robben Island, South Africa. The miniseries is being produced and financed by Toronto-based Blue Ice Pictures and also produced by South Africa’s Out of Africa Entertainment in association with the U.K.’s Leftbank Pictures and Cinema Gypsy Productions.

Madiba is an ambitious and epic event series that tells an incredibly emotional and courageous story that is highly relevant in today’s world,” said Daniel March, the managing partner for Dynamic. “This is a very talented creative team that has worked tirelessly to bring this important event to life and we’re honored to have the opportunity to connect Madiba with audiences around the world.”
