ARTE France has boarded the Movistar Plus+ original The New Years, which is directed in part by Rodrigo Sorogoyen (Riot Police, Offworld, The Beasts).

The series begins with 30-year-olds Óscar and Ana getting ready to run away from their lives before they cross paths with each other and fall in love. Over ten episodes, it follows their journey over ten years as they confront the passage of time and the choices they’ve made.

Sorogoyen directs the first four episodes of the series, while Sandra Romero directs three and David Martín de los Santos directs three. The series is written by Sara Cano, Paula Fabra and Sorogoyen, along with Marina Rodríguez Colás and Antonio Rojano.

The lead roles of The New Years are played by Iria del Río (El Inmortal, El increíble finde menguante, Riot Police) and Francesco Carril (Un amor, La reconquista, Galgos).

The New Years has wrapped filming, during which it shot in Spain’s Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha, France’s Lyon and Germany’s Berlin. Movistar Plus+ International is handling distribution.

“We are really thrilled to have ARTE France again on board with us,” said Domingo Corral, director of fiction and entertainment at Movistar Plus+. “Their vision about content and their huge experience in producing distinguished and touching stories will add great value to The New Years.”

Alexandre Piel, deputy head of drama at ARTE France, commented, “We’re very happy and honored to co-produce The New Years with Movistar Plus+. First, because it’s a true pleasure to renew our production commitment with our friends from Movistar Plus+ after two great seasons of Hierro. Secondly, because it is an honor to work with the unique and talented creator and director Rodrigo Sorogoyen. His way [of depicting] the chemistry that operates between a woman and a man from their initial encounter on a New Year’s Eve is by itself fascinating. But not only that, he dares to make them travel over the years—ten years for ten episodes, revolving around the same moment of the year: New Year’s Eve.”

Nacho Lavilla, producer at Caballo Films, added, “The co-production with ARTE France is very important for Caballo Films. It’s a great boost and it comes to reinforce Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s career in Europe. We are truly pleased with the final outcome after the shooting, and we are sure that Movistar Plus+ and ARTE France partnership will give the series a relevant reach and a great international exposure.”
