TORONTO: The new Canadian SVOD service shomi has inked a deal with BBC Worldwide North America for a range of exclusive content, alongside a separate pact that sees it acquiring the hit crime drama The Blacklist from Sony Pictures Television.

From BBC Worldwide North America, shomi scores A Young Doctor's Notebook & Other Stories, which will make its Canadian premiere exclusively on the service. Also exclusive in Canada on shomi is Way to Go. This content deal makes shomi the exclusive Canadian SVOD home to the BBC Worldwide series Moone Boy, an Irish sitcom; The Honourable Woman, a spy thriller starring Maggie Gyllenhaal; Jane Campion's Top of the Lake; and the comedy The Wrong Mans. Previous seasons of A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Doctor Who and Top Gear are included as well.

“Our deal with shomi is an exceptional way to expand the reach of our great content across the Canadian market and we are thrilled to be a part of the launch of their new service, ” said Michael L. Smith of BBC Worldwide.

“Finally Canadians get to see the treasures from BBC Worldwide. They are some of the best comedies and dramas out of the U.K., and Canadians will now get to enjoy them on shomi,” said Marni Shulman, the head of content and programming at shomi.

Separately, shomi will become the exclusive SVOD home in Canada for The Blacklist.  “I can’t think of many things more binge-worthy and addictive than the deliciously, devious 'Red' Reddington. Canadians love The Blacklist, so we are bringing them this show,” said Shulman. “We are committed to bringing our customers the most popular and highly rated series on prime-time TV.”
