Hong Kong Media Mogul Run Run Shaw Dies

HONG KONG: Sir Run Run Shaw, who founded the legendary Shaw Brothers movie studio and Hong Kong terrestrial broadcaster TVB, has died.

Shaw passed away at home. He was 107. A hugely influential figure in Asian media, Shaw founded TVB, the first free-to-air station in Hong Kong. A statement from the broadcaster said: “With his vision and energy, he had built the company to become Hong Kong’s premier television and a world leader in the Chinese-language television industry. Although we knew this day would come, no words can adequately express our sorrow and lessen our sense of a profound loss. He will be sadly missed by all of us in TVB. Out thoughts are with his wife, Miss Mona Fong, and his family."

In addition to being a pioneering figure in Hong Kong television, Shaw made waves in the movie industry with his studio's cult-hit kung-fu movies. He offloaded his library of Shaw Brothers features to Celestial Pictures in 2001.

Shaw was also known for his philanthropy. He was knighted in 1977.
