Highlights Unveiled for Singapore Media Festival

The seventh edition of the Singapore Media Festival kicks off November 26 with a program consisting of both physical and digital events.

The focus of the event, hosted by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), is Asian storytelling. It encompasses the Asian Academy Creative Awards (AAA), the Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF) and ScreenSingapore (SS), the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), and this year’s new addition, the inaugural SuperGamerFest (SGF) 2020. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and restrictions on large-scale consumer events, Singapore Comic Con (SGCC) will be taking a hiatus this year.

“This year has been undeniably challenging, but the resilience and creativity of our media community as they navigate uncharted waters, adapt, collaborate and continue telling our stories has been inspiring,” said Howie Lau, assistant chief executive for media and innovation at IMDA. “This has brought on a fresh wave of new experiences and uncovered growth opportunities for the region. As the market re-opens and global players look to tap into the diverse stories in this region, we stand ready to celebrate novel ideas, talents and innovation, and to reimagine Asian storytelling for the global stage.”

ATF is going full online this year from December 1 to 4 with a virtual trade market, conferences and pitches and networking opportunities. “As Asia’s leading entertainment content market and conference, ATF has been delivering strong business outcomes for the industry,” said Yeow Hui Leng, group project director at Reed Exhibitions Singapore. “While we are unable to host a physical edition this December, our dedication to facilitate connections between the world and Asia remains. This will be achieved through a combination of digital networking tools, live speed-dating events, recommendation algorithms, and bite-sized content showcases.”

The annual Southeast Asian Film Financing (SAFF) Project Market by ScreenSingapore is also going virtual this year. The Asian Academy Creative Awards kicks off with a digital National Winners Conference, followed by a virtual Red Carpet and award ceremonies for the regional winners. The 31st edition of the Singapore International Film Festival will host virtual film screenings and physical events.

The Singapore Media Festival will also include the Media International Advisory Council (IAC) convening virtually, exploring how Singapore can play a stronger role in helping media companies respond to trends in the media business.
