China Test-Launches First 3D TV Channel

BEIJING: China has begun the trial run of its first 3D channel, operated by China Central Television (CCTV), which will formally launch the service during Chinese New Year on January 23.

The channel will be viewable to those with 3D enabled televisions and those with HD digital TV sets. The initial slate will include four and a half hour of 3D programming per day, with a second repeat showing the same day. Programming includes animation, sports, documentaries, dramas, entertainment a live broadcasting of events such as CCTV’s New Year’s Gala and the London 2012 Olympic Games.

"The launch of the 3D trial channel is a significant step in the development of China’s television," said Cai Fuchao, head of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).
